The Alexander Teacher is not a mechanic. The role of the Teacher is not to fix this or that symptom or problem. It may appear like that to the casual observer. And indeed, in our increasingly regulatory environment, it may be easier to define ourselves as problem solvers and palliative carers.
The truth is more complex and profound. Of course, the Technique can result indirectly in more postural and muscular harmony. However, this is an indirect result of a radical shift in the habitual patterns of our nervous systems. This radical shift is communicated within a relational dance between Teacher and Pupil; a dance in which both parties participate and contribute actively to the process of change.
