Inhibition as a Capacity

Inhibition is often confused with a kind of putting on the breaks, and coming to an emergency halt. This is not the case. Inhibition is like a muscle in the brain that needs practice in order to develop and grow. Inhibition is a mental capacity that conditions all the reactions of the person to the full range of stimuli of living. When inhibition is available, the habitual reactive thinking patterns are suspended. In this new state, we are not dominated by unduly excited fear reflexes, uncontrolled emotions, and fixed prejudices.
